Contesa Trebbiano d’Abruzzo

Contessa Trebbiano d’Abruzzo

Beautifully textural and complex, part skin fermented white from a small block of 25 year old Trebbiano d’Abruzzo on the Pasetti family’s Collecorvino estate. Sustainably produced with minimal intervention – wild ferment, low sulphur, no fining, just 3,000 bottles produced.

The Contesa wines are impeccably-made expressions of Abruzzo’s local grapes – modern and easy to drink, yet wines of real substance.

Production

From a 1.8ha, 25 year old block of Trebbiano d’Abruzzo (a distinct variety to the ubiquitous Trebbiano Toscano) in Collecorvino. The vines are cultivated at high density, in clay soils at 250m altitude, with yields below 70 hl/ha. Harvested at the end of September, 10% of the crop is left to macerate, causing spontaneous fermentation on skins. After 5 days, the remaining grapes are gently pressed and added to this “Piede di lievito”. After a slow fermentation at 18-19C, lasting 4 weeks, the wine is decanted from skins and held on lees for 6 months in stainless steel. Bottling takes place with no fining, low suplhur (below 70 mg/ltr total) and only a coarse filtration.

Tasting notes

Pleasantly rustic but with youthful fruit too, hints of preserved lemons and aromas of woodsmoke, butterscotch and wild herbs. The palate starts fresh and taut giving way to a textural, gently nutty mid palate with depth and structure. A serious wine with a persistent, complex and savoury finish.

Contesa is committed to its sustainability programme and practices an integrated crop management system that is certified under the EU-recognised Sistema Di Qualità Nazionale Di Produzione Integrata (SQNPI) scheme. The Pasetti family is considering a move towards full organic certification.

Surrounding the winery, the south-facing slopes of clay-chalk soils, at around 250m altitude, are ideal for the cultivation of Montepulciano, with Pecorino grown on the lower slopes. The cellar was completed in 2004 – carved into the hillside.

Rocco Pasetti’s superbly sited, 50 hectare, estate lies in the heart of the Collecorvino district in the hills northwest of Pescara, recognised as one of the best vineyard zones in Abruzzo.Surrounding the winery, the south-facing slopes of clay-chalk soils, at around 250m altitude, are ideal for the cultivation of Montepulciano, with Pecorino grown on the lower slopes. The cellar was completed in 2004 – carved into the hillside. Rocco’s son, Franco Pasetti, is also a winemaker and now works alongside him at the estate.

Trebbiano

“Extensively planted, Trebbiano is estimated to produce more white wine than any other grape variety Italy. Being quite neutral, it is frequently blended with grape varieties displaying more dominant characteristics. Generally dry and fairly acidic, wines tend to be crisp, refreshing and food friendly when carefully made.
