Grosset Alea Riesling

Grosset Alea Riesling

Grosset Alea Riesling

The Alea (pronounced ey-lee-uh) vineyard, is named for the Greek goddess of wisdom and courage, Athena Alea. The vineyard is situated at Watervale`s highest elevation, where the soil is poorer and tougher than that at the adjacent ‘Springvale’ vineyard. The low yields are vital to allow for full ripening at high acidity which Jeff Grosset is convinced is the key to success with the off-dry style.

This is an amazing riesling, perhaps the best yet under this label. It has intense lemon grass and lime juice characters which follow through on to the palate. The flavours are intensely concentrated, powerful and show incredible depth. The vibrant natural acidity balances the sweetness and lingers long and dry on the finish.
Inspired by the best dry Rieslings of Europe, Alea is produced in the international style, made to the Grosset standard. From the Rockwood vineyard in Watervale where the likeness to European fruit was first noticed in 2007, this wine offers great versatility; people, food, situations.
Ageing Potential: First vintage 2012 so as yet unknown, however probably 15 years
Source: Grosset Rockwood Vineyard (ACO certified organic)
Fruit Flavours: Kaffir lime with hints of white flowers and herbs
Profile: Almost dry, underpinned by a linear acidity: fragrant, generous, succulent and long
Fining: Nil- suitable for vegans and vegetarians
This has powerful aromatics – enticing lemon, lime blossom, with dried herb notes and hints of shaley minerality. Its concentration and underlying power give it the appearance of having an additional layer of flavour – pure intense lime juice at its core – with just a hint of sweetness giving it its distinctive character. The wine’s pristine bracing acidity dominates the finish which is taut, long and dry.

Grosset

“Grosset Wines is an independently owned winery set in the Clare Valley producing just six highly regarded premium wines each vintage.
The first vintage was in 1981, after which Jeff Grosset has almost single-handedly been responsible for the renaissance of Clare Riesling. His Polish Hill Riesling, one of the world’s great examples of this variety, stands out as Australia’s finest Riesling.”

South Australia

Vineyards were first established in the mid 1800s. Some of the early winery names, Wendouree, Knappstein and Quelltaler are still in the region. Nowadays there is a mix of very large companies and a significant number of boutique wineries. The climate is regarded as warm, but there are variations due to altitude. The main wine styles: White – Riesling, Semillon, Chardonnay; Red – Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon.
