Marras Piekenierskloof Grenache
Piekenierskloof Grenache, Marras has ripe cherry and wild strawberry on the nose and palate. This wine is bright and round and beautifully knitted with a fine minerality to the finish.
The grapes for the Marras Piekenierskloof Grenache are handpicked. They are then destemmed and crushed first thing the next morning to retain their freshness. The fruit enjoys a cold soak for three days to aid extraction and is then partially fermented in old oak barrels for 10 months.
The small and mighty label ‘Marras’ is led by talented young winemaker, Martin Lamprecht. He was a one-time student at Cederberg under David Nieuwoudt’s wing and has previously also worked in the Rhône. Martin brings fresh ideas to his current home in the Swartland, a melting pot for hot new talent and South Africa’s leading region for liberal winemaking and experimentation.
In his own modest words, “All I really do is take the grapes by their hands and guide them to where they want to be.” Using grapes from the vast plain and the elevated terroir of Piekenierskloof, he makes some bright new examples of Chenin, Grenache, and a Shiraz Cinsault blend.
From their perch in the lofty Piekenierskloof region, these dryland bush vines have seen and lived through it all; extreme conditions include temperature fluctuations, while being rooted in a dry layer of sandstone and granite soils with just enough water to produce grapes that add truly exceptional depth and complexity. Yip, these vines have stories to tell and they shout them loudly from the glass. The Chenin Blanc, Grenache and new Blombos Rosé offer out-of-this-world purity of fruit as well as a fine texture that sings with every single sip. You’ll have to finish the bottle to put the tales to bed.

Marras Wines are the brainchild of Martin ‘Marras’ Lamprecht, a passionate winemaker who believes in the power of shared experiences. Born in Cape Town and raised in Dundee, KwaZulu-Natal, Marras’ love for life and all its beautiful and delicious aspects is evident in every bottle of wine he produces.
Son of the soil Martin ‘Marras’ Lamprecht was born Capetonian and raised in the small town of Dundee in KwaZulu-Natal. He blames his close-knit family for his love of life and all the beautiful and delicious things in it. It was this joy of sharing experiences that sent Marras down the winemaking path; he graduated from Elsenburg Agricultural Training Institute with a Cum Laude in B.Agric Cellar Technology in 2010, the academic equivalent of All Gold Tomato Sauce. Armed only with the best recipe for braaibroodjies and fledgling ambitions, he was then mentored by the legendary David Nieuwoudt of Cederberg Wines. The time came to share that recipe with others, and Marras with the searching soul of a jackal made his way to the Northern Rhône Valley, France and found that he had quite a bit to learn from the French, including that a winemaker must never overestimate his own importance. They also taught him how to produce wines that showcase the history of the vineyard and its people, while introducing him to some of the singular varietals he came to rediscover back home in the Swartland and Piekenierskloof. In return he showed them how to properly gooi a braai.
