PRODUCER
16 Stops wines are made with fruit from across South Australia. They are made alongside the Willunga 100 wines in McLaren Vale and benefit from the same input from winemaker Mike Farmilo. Given our unwavering commitment to promoting ‘regionality’ with our Australian portfolio, we felt it was best to invest in premium regions for our ‘entry point’ Australian wines. And, given the quality of the fruit from which they’re made, the 16 Stops wines offer tremendous value for money.
VINEYARDS
The grapes are selected from multiple sites in South Australia, with majority coming from vineyards in the Riverland district along the Murray River. This area has two main soil types; the river valley soils consisting of sandy loams over clay subsoils, and on higher ground, wind-blown sands over lime and clay layers. The climate here sees long sunny days and noticeably cooler nights. A small percentage of the fruit came from Currency Creek, a region on
the Fleurieu Peninsula, about 80 kilometres south of Adelaide. The region is not far from the sea, so night time temperatures are not extreme and the daytime temperatures are moderated by cool breezes in the afternoons.

\the wine was fermented in stainless steel static, fermenters with minimal cap management allowing soft and gentle extraction of the natural tannins from the fruit. Following seven days on the skins, the juice was pressed to tank. The majority was matured in tank, with a small proportion matured in French oak hogsheads for added complexity.

The name 16 Stops comes from the number of stops on the railway line from Adelaide to the Vineyard.

Willunga 100

Willunga 100 aims to produce unique and distinctive wines which capture the essence of the region. The grapes come from a range of selected vineyards in McLaren Vale and Adelaide Hills (for the whites), including some over 50 years old. After only its first vintage in 2005, wine journalist and judge James Halliday gave the winery a Five Star rating in the 2008 Guide, and named it as one of his ‘Top Ten newcomers’. This vindicated the original aim of Willunga 100, which was to inject some quality and excitement back into Australian wine at this price. New vintages will be made by winemaker Tim James (ex Hardy’s and Wirra Wirra and a regular on the wine judging circuit) and continue to build on the quality of the range.

South Australia

The McLaren Vale is predominately a red wine region, producing some of the best red wines in South Australia. Vineyards were first planted in the mid 1800s. One of the early pioneers Thomas Hardy established a business that evolved to BRL Hardy, one of the largest wine companies in the country. The region also has a healthy number of boutique wineries that consistently make fine wines and experiment with different wine styles. The climate is warm to hot with dry summers, and benefits from cooling breezes from the St Vincent Gulf. The main wine styles: Red – Shiraz (rich, ripe & generous), Cabernet Sauvignon; White – Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc.
