Yalumba FDR1A

Yalumba FDR1A

In 1974 Yalumba created an outstanding Cabernet Sauvignon & Shiraz blend known simply as Fine Dry Red 1A or Yalumba FDR1A. The wine became a legend in winemaking circles, appreciated for its fruit expression and restrained power. Sourced from exceptional sites within the cool rugged slopes of Eden Valley, FDR1A is a testament to winemaking and viticultural craftsmanship

The grapes for FDR1A are sourced entirely from vineyards within Eden Valley. The four Cabernet Sauvignon vineyards and two Shiraz vineyards have been selected to showcase the elegance and purity of fruit that the region is so well known for.

Medium dense crimson red in colour, this wine exhibits a defined and perfumed floral aromatic of powdery spices, violets and maraschino cherries, combined with anise, cedar and stalky currants. The palate is medium to full bodied in style; this is a very fine and elegant wine layered with sweet fruit complexity. It shows a plush and seamlessly textured palate that is complete with long, fine and powdery tannins.

Yalumba Distinguished Sites is a family of exceptional wines; each carefully sourced and masterfully crafted to capture the true essence of specific, special sites from which it is grown. This “Fine Dry Red” is an example of Yalumba’s commitment to, and mastery of, the quintessential Australian Cabernet Shiraz. Fruit to craft this wine is picked from vineyards in Eden Valley’s beautiful high country.
VINTAGE CONDITIONS
The vineyard soils enjoyed consistent winter rainfall. Spring was warmer and drier than average, creating smaller grapes and bunches with great aromas and flavours. A long, relatively mild summer with very few heat spikes and quite cool nights helped to retain the acidity and pristine fruit flavours we seek for our Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz wines.
TERRIOR/PROVENANCE/REGION
Sourced entirely from Eden Valley vineyards. The Cabernet Sauvignon is sourced from the Miles vineyard at Craneford and the Yalumba Mexican Vale
hilltop block. The Shiraz is predominantly sourced from the two oldest sections of the Yalumba Shorts vineyard, planted in 1900 and 1970, with the balance from the Bartholomaeus old Shiraz vineyard, planted in 1920, in the township of Eden Valley. From these vineyards comes a wine of intriguing complexity, inherently influenced by the diversity of soils to yield a Fine Dry Red that’s as singular and expressive as the earth in which it’s grown.
TASTING NOTES
A complex array of fine, powdery sandalwood and cedar notes with traces of mint. Laden with fresh, aromatic red fruits, the wine is youthful and elegant in the mouth with vitality, a firm structure and soft tannins

Yalumba

“Founded in 1849 by Samuel Smith, Yalumba is Australia’s oldest family owned winery. Today, the winery is owned by fifth generation descendants, Robert & Sam Hill Smith and their families.
Yalumba is determined to create wines with genuine regional character, varietal flavour and individual personality; wines that say remarkable things about some of the world’s most remarkable wine regions.”

South Australia

The Eden Valley is between 400 and 600 metres in the Barossa Range, part of the Mount Lofty Range. It shares it historical roots with the Barossa Valley. Yalumba has substantial vineyard holdings, and a winery at Angaston, the site of the first vines planted by founder Samuel Smith in 1849. The cool climate provides ideal conditions for the production of high quality Riesling, Chardonnay and Shiraz wine.
